I know the first thought that popped into my head while preparing for self-isolation was WTF do I do for exercise now that gyms are closed and classes are canceled?! I was in a full on panic mode. What was I supposed to do? Watch someone else on my tiny phone screen lead a workout? Actually, yes. That’s exactly what I did. And guess what? I love it.
As humans, we become habitual with our routines. I never miss my Wednesday 6am spin class… like, ever. There is beauty in routine –– it’s familiar and comfortable. Nothing shakes up a routine like being quarantined in your house indefinitely.
Social distancing is not easy, but nothing is permanent and when else will you have the opportunity to try some of the most recognized fitness studios and teachers, for free?
Fitness studios have begun streaming workouts regularly. The classes are often conducted from inside the instructors homes on Instagram Live, Facebook, Zoom, and other streaming platforms. The exercise routines are free or low-cost and available to everyone.
Where exactly are we hopping? I recommend these 10 studios for livestream workouts:
1. Y7 Studio
Y7 Studio is sweat drippin’, beat bumpin’, candlelit yoga with studios across NYC, LA and Chicago. Although you won't get the low lighting, infrared heat in your living room, their mission is simple: to make yoga more inclusive and accessible for all. I recommend #HipHopSunday on their Instagram Live!
2. Pure Barre
Pure Barre offers an effective total body workout focused on low-impact, high intensity movements that lift and tone muscles to improve strength, agility and flexibility for every body. With studios across North America, the method is tried, tested and proven. Don’t have any fitness equipment? Not to worry! All of their online workouts streamed on Facebook can be done without any equipment at all or modified with household items such as soup cans for weights.
3. The Class
The Class by Taryn Toomey has taken the fitness world by storm, with a celebrity following like Gisele, Jennifer Aniston and Christy Turlington, so SIGN ME UP. It's a fitness method and “practice of self study” that incorporates cardio, meditation, and therapeutic yelling. The offering is a 14 day free trial with live classes every day.
The original high intensity interval workout with studios across the globe. Barry's tones muscle and maximizes fat loss with a combination of running and weights, with a different body focus every day. Barry's Canada has several "double-floor" workouts per day on their IG Live.
The creator of Toronto's MISFITSTUDIO, Amber Joliat is actually a movement goddess. The MISFITMETHOD combines elements of dance, yoga and Pilates and they are offering classes on Instagram Live with a rotating schedule every day taught by their amazing instructors.
A feel good running experience for every body with treadmill-based interval and strength training classes in a supportive, light flashing, music bumping, “we’re in this together” environment. I went to Mile High in Soho and I didn't stop taking about it for weeks. Their coaches are holding Instagram Live classes offering cross-training and bodyweight exercises that can be done in the safety of your own home.
7. Sky Ting
The Sky Ting yoga methodology, by the power duo Krissy Jones and Chloe Kernaghan is a traditional hybrid of alignment, breath work and meditation. Sky Ting is one of the most buzz worthy yoga studios in NYC with a devoted following and locations in Chinatown, Tribeca and Brooklyn. They have been offering a live stream class every day on their website.
Rumble combines boxing with the transformative power of strength training. It’s a high-octane 10 round fight that offers HIIT, metabolic conditioning, and the benefits of cardio in one seamless class. Rumble was created to shake up the stale norms of the group fitness world, and are committed to less cheesy fitness and more authenticity, which I absolutely love. They are offering Instagram Live classes almost every day, incorporating air boxing, body weight strength and conditioning and it's a must check out!
TRILLFIT is an inclusive hip-hop-inspired dance cardio class in Boston. They believe that fitness should be fun, inclusive, and set to the illest soundtrack. Studio classes have a live DJ, dancing, twerking and high-intensity workouts. This studio is so awesome and I did a 20 minute sculp class from TRILLFIT @ HOME and it was so much fun! A great opportunity to try a class that's truly unique and vibrant. The online classes are free, but they also accept donations.
Yoga Tree is Toronto's largest independent yoga studio, with soon to be six locations in the GTA. Yoga Tree offers a wide variety of classes in various levels, led by highly trained yoga instructors. They are currently offering 30 minute every day on Instagram Live for free and 50 minute classes Zoom for $12 a class or $25 for 3 classes a week. Each class is has its own theme and style, offering a little something for everyone.
